HISTORYTytos were bred and trained from an early age by the Aegleans in the secret Albanox division, who work solely for the crown to 'keep the peace'.
The batch Oberon was born into originally had 7 hatchlings, a large number than usual to be born on a single day. Two of the nestmates died 3 days later for lack of nutrition, as the 5 others were much larger and stronger than they. 2 weeks later, another was killed after a wing was crushed by the frenzy of the nestmates. The four left were transferred to a training facility. During the next 5 years, two were 'put away' due to their reluctance in fighting and 'radical' ideas. The two remaining, finished training at the age of 8 and participated in the Naming Ceremony. The Naming Ceremony is akin to a final test, and is the most arduous of the tasks. They must survive the hunting grounds for 2 weeks, without aid. The ceremony is always synonymous to their hatchdays, and on their 8th birthday, the two hatchlings of batch 4JL1557 entered the hunting grounds. The hunting grounds is a lawless zone where the convicts, slaves, and slaughterkind are sent to their last days. The carnivorous population enter the hunting grounds to feed. The only law is the oldest law of all. The law of Evolution. Survival of the Fittest. Hunters are allowed any weapon they desire, and are simply marked with a single bell, to give the prey a chance to run if they wish. During the Naming Ceremony, Tytos are sent in as if they are prey, and therefore can be subject to any death by other prey or the predators. However, the catch, for Tytos, is that the more bells they bring back successfully, the better their ranking when it comes to getting a job. Returning with one bell, grants a step above the barrack-lofts, which are grimy and crowded, to a slightly better position at the beck and call of mid-rank government workers. Two bells gives them their own nest and a job with high-ranking nobles, but not the top. When one of the Tytos sent into the hunting grounds on July 4th of 1565 returned with 3 bells and the feather of his nestmate, that particular Tytos' existence was spread like wildfire. He received offers of jobs from 3 of the 4 Supreme Cardinals (all Winds except the East) and countless Cardinal Members. His Naming Ceremony was possibly the most attended in the last 4 decades. Unlike other Tytos who are given names of objects, he was given a True Name. One that came from history and books. At the age of 8 years and 2 weeks, the name Oberon was on the tongue of nearly every politician and noble. When time came to choose the person he would work for, for possibly the majority of his life, he did not choose the Supreme Cardinals, but a Cardinal Member of the Eastern Winds, named Chardonnay. Thus in 1566, Oberon is officially assigned to Chardonnay, after working for her in temp for a year. |
